Insecure when without a mobile or internet? Constantly checking e-mails? Faster texter than writer? Such traits may be needed for the future workplace

Today, there are many technological devices that are potentially labour saving, but to what extent do such advances increase rather than decrease workload and stress?

Many readers of The Beginner thought that the overall effect of technological development was positive. In a recent survey, 46% responded that advantages outweighed potential pitfalls and another 31% were very optimistic. Only 15% of those who voted were more skeptical about the implications and 7% said they were undecided.

New technology can enable employees to work faster and more efficiently, helping to facilitate flexible and remote working. It can, however, also mean that the option to really get away and switch off is gone. This can lead to stress, burn-outs, and even depression.

Nevertheless, many companies see new technology as the means to increase profit margins and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace. Tele- and video conferencing, as well as new emerging technologies are enabling people around the world to communicate and collaborate rapidly and efficiently. Yet despite all the improvements in productivity and efficiency offered by new technologies, there are several areas of concern.

Security, for example, is a primary issue inherent in a mobile and accessible IT system. Companies implementing new technology must also take into account other social impacts as various studies have shown lower satisfaction levels for users of virtual meeting tools in contrast to fact-to-face meetings. Evaluating performance, distributing the workload, and motivating employees is also more difficult when they are not physically present.

Despite the existing hurdles and worries, the growth of new technologies in the workplace is showing no sign of slowing down. The challenge thus lies in discovering how to implement new technology in the workplace of the future, without sacrificing the well-being of employees.
