Fighting Global Warming: Can we practice what we preach?
In February 2010 TheBeginner.eu asked its readers about their means to get to work
The survey followed a previous poll that determined visitors are very concerned about global warming and would like to do something about it immediately. This is why it is interesting to compare the results of the two surveys and determine whether TheBeginner.eu readers are ready to practice what they preach.
33.3% of the website visitors indicated that they go to work on foot. If that number is combined with the other sustainable means of transport, such as bike and public transport, the percentage increases to 62,4%. Compared to the 72% of readers who indicated that human activity that exacerbates global warming must be stopped immediately, the result indicates that the majority of TheBeginner.eu visitors are ready to implement their ideas through concrete actions.
It is important to note, however, that 33.3% percent still use their car to get to work. While this group remains smaller, it still boasts considerable numbers for people conscious how harmful their travel could be to the environment.
It must also be taken into consideration that TheBeginner.eu readers are professionally specialised and highly conscious of their impact on the environment. Less educated or informed citizens may still enjoy higher numbers. Figures also vary greatly according to country. The irony is that the countries best educated to understand the problem- the states in Western Europe and North America- are also those that contribute significantly to the industrial activities that fuel global warming. The shortcomings of recent environmental conferences further prove that the road ahead will not be easy. We believe that due to their education and awareness, TheBeginner.eu readers are in a privileged position to attract attention to the problem and be trail blazers for its resolution.
